How do we score?
Trust is everything to us. So we explain exactly where the scores come from.
Identifying the product
When you scan a barcode we first look the product up in the Open Beauty Facts open database, then in our community database. If it is not found, we read the ingredients from a label photo. The photo is processed on your phone; it is never uploaded or stored.
Ingredient dictionary
Every ingredient is assessed against open sources: CosIng (the EU's official cosmetic ingredient database), the EU cosmetic allergen list, and published comedogenicity ratings. Every ingredient is also checked against the FULL prohibited list of the EU Cosmetics Regulation (Annex II, 1,700+ substances). We never say "the AI said so"; every rating has a source.
Personalization
First a general rating that applies to everyone, then a personal layer based on your skin type and concerns (acne, redness, fragrance allergy): for example, fragrance is "caution" for everyone but becomes "risky" if you have a fragrance allergy.
The score
We start from 100 points: each ingredient risky for your profile subtracts 20, each caution ingredient subtracts 7. Sub-components of the same fragrance are counted as a group, not punished one by one.
Honesty note
Our dictionary is compiled from open scientific sources but has not yet been independently verified by a dermatologist / cosmetic chemist. Results are for information only and are not medical advice. We only say "contains this ingredient"; we never pass judgment on any brand.
Privacy
Photos you take are processed on your device and never stored. The only things we keep: the scanned barcode + ingredients text (for the community database), and your own scan history if you signed in.
