What is Parabens?
Also known as: Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben
Short answer
Parabens are common preservatives that stop bacteria and mold in cosmetics. The EU science committee SCCS considers methyl and ethyl paraben safe at permitted levels; it restricted the level of propyl and butyl paraben and banned some long-chain parabens. This is the source of the hormone debate.
What is Parabens and what does it do?
Parabens are a preservative family that stops products spoiling and growing microbes after opening. They have been used for decades; the most common are methyl and ethyl paraben. Without preservatives, water-based products quickly grow bacteria/mold, which makes the parabens' function important.
What is it for?
They are effective, broad-spectrum preservatives that work at low concentrations, keeping products safe over their shelf and use life. Being well-studied is an advantage over some newer alternative preservatives.
What to watch for
The debate arose because some long-chain parabens (propyl, butyl and larger) can show weak estrogen-like effects in animal and cell studies. The EU acted: it banned isopropyl/isobutyl/phenyl/benzyl/pentyl paraben, capped the combined level of propyl and butyl paraben, and restricted propyl/butyl paraben in diaper-area products. Short-chain methyl and ethyl paraben are considered safe.
If you want to avoid it
You do not have to avoid them; if a product sold in the EU contains parabens, they are at the permitted safe level. Still, if you prefer, 'paraben-free' products are easy to find; these use other preservatives (such as phenoxyethanol).

Frequently asked
Are parabens harmful?
The most common, methyl and ethyl paraben, are considered safe. For some long-chain parabens the EU set level limits or bans; in permitted products the remaining amount is at a safe level.
Why is there a hormone debate?
Some parabens showed weak estrogen-like effects in lab studies; because it is unclear whether this translates to harm in real human use, the EU acted cautiously with restrictions.
Is paraben-free better?
Not necessarily. Paraben-free products use other preservatives; all need a preservative or they grow microbes. It is a matter of preference.
