It beeps at the till, and it sits in exactly the same form on the back of a shampoo bottle and a packet of biscuits: a row of lines with 13 digits underneath. The barcode is one of the most myth-laden parts of a label, and the most common myth is this: 'the first three digits show which country the product was made in.' This article explains what those digits really say, what they do not, and what happens behind the curtain when you scan a product.

What is a barcode, really?

The barcode on most supermarket products is a 13-digit number, called EAN-13, written as lines. The lines themselves are not magic; they are only the machine-readable form of the digits below them. The number's official name is GTIN (global trade item number), and it is issued worldwide through a single registry: GS1, an international not-for-profit standards organisation.

The number has one job: identity. It is the universal way of saying 'this pack is this product from this company'. The till system finds the price, the warehouse software finds the stock, and apps like ours find the content information, all through this number, each asking its own database. As long as the number stays the same, the product is recognised by it in İzmir and in Berlin alike.

The last digit is a nice detail: it is calculated from the previous 12 digits using fixed weights. If the scanner at the till misreads one digit, the sum no longer works out and the read is rejected; every barcode carries a small spell-checker inside it.

The country-code myth

Now for the most widespread belief. Calling the first two or three digits a 'country code' is not wrong, but the code shows which country's GS1 organisation issued the producer's number, not where the product was made. GS1 itself says this plainly: the prefix is not an indicator of origin.

The difference looks subtle on paper and is large in practice. An importer registered in Türkiye can print its own 869 number on a product it brings in from abroad; the product is imported, yet its barcode looks 'local'. The reverse happens too: a shampoo made in a global brand's factory in Türkiye can circulate with the prefix of the country where the head office is registered; the product is Turkish-made, yet its barcode looks 'imported'. This is why apps and lists that try to read origin from a barcode are regularly wrong.

If you genuinely want to know the origin, the place to look is clear: the country-of-origin statement on the label, the producer's name and address, and the importer details on an imported product. These fields are mandatory on labels, and unlike the barcode, they really do describe origin.

The most useful row in the table may be 20-29: the barcode on cheese weighed at the counter or fruit bagged at the greengrocer is that store's own internal number. The same number can mean an entirely different product in another store, which is why these labels appear in no product database, and their absence is not an error.

Does a barcode reveal the contents?

No, not at all. Inside a barcode there is no ingredient list, no nutrition data, no quality information of any kind; there is only an identity number. When a scanner app shows you contents, the process is this: the number is read, looked up in a database, the previously recorded content of the matching product is fetched, and the scoring runs on top of that data. This has one consequence: if the match in the database is wrong, the result is wrong. When a barcode has been paired with the wrong product, the scan works perfectly and still brings the wrong product to the screen. That is why we ask 'is this the right product?' after a scan; the community's yes and no answers clean up the matches over time. The barcode is the most reliable part of the technology; the fragile part is the link between the number and the product data.

What to do when a barcode is not found

  • A scale label starting with 2: the product has no universal number, so not being found is normal; for the contents, read the label itself.

  • In cosmetics, the box and the bottle can carry different barcodes; trying both improves the chance of a match.

Will the QR code replace the barcode?

You see square codes (QR) on packaging more and more often. A QR code can carry more than the striped barcode: a web address, a batch number, an expiry date. GS1 is running a global transition so that tills can read QR codes in the coming years; in the long run, square codes will appear next to and in place of the stripes on the shelf. The practical situation today is this: the product's identity still lives in the 13-digit number, and the QR code on a pack is usually just a link to a promotional page.
