A versatile component that protects products against bacteria and mold and also gives a mild scent; it also functions as a solvent. At low concentrations it causes no problem for most people, but it is on the EU's official fragrance-allergen list and can cause irritation or allergy on sensitive skin. It is recommended that those with a history of fragrance allergy be careful when they see it on a label and, if needed, first patch-test on a small area.
