Ingredient

Cocamide DEA

Caution

What is this ingredient, what does it do?

Foam booster (debated)

What is it, what should you do?

A foam thickener. It is controversial because it can form unwanted compounds called nitrosamines when it combines with certain substances in a product; California added it to its carcinogen list, and the EU limits its conditions of use. It is increasingly being abandoned in modern formulas; if you see it in a shampoo you use often, alternative brands are plentiful.

Other names: Cocamide mea, Palm kernelamide dea, Lauramide dea
