Ingredient

Dibutyl Phthalate

Risky

What is this ingredient, what does it do?

Phthalate (banned in EU cosmetics)

What is it, what should you do?

Phthalate derivatives used in nail polish and some perfume formulas to provide flexibility and scent retention. Because of their potential to mimic the hormone system, it was assessed that they could pose a risk especially in pregnancy and children, and the EU banned their use in cosmetic products. Preferring the phthalate-free label when buying nail polish is a reasonable precaution.

Other names: Diethylhexyl phthalate, Dimethyl phthalate
