DMDM Hydantoin

Caution

What is this ingredient, what does it do?

Formaldehyde-releasing preservative

May cause irritation

What is it, what should you do?

A "formaldehyde-releaser" preservative that protects a product by slowly releasing a very small amount of formaldehyde over time. Because formaldehyde is a definite carcinogen this group is controversial; although the amount released in cosmetics is very low, it can cause allergy and irritation in sensitive people. If you have a formaldehyde allergy (which can develop from hairdresser products), stay firmly away from these three names.

Other names: Imidazolidinyl urea, Diazolidinyl urea
