Ingredient

Phenoxyethanol

Good

What is this ingredient, what does it do?

Preservative (considered safe at low levels)

What is it, what should you do?

The most widely used modern preservative in place of parabens. The EU considers it safe up to a 1% limit; irritation and allergy are rarely reported, and the debate around it is not as big as parabens. Cosmetics without preservatives are more dangerous because they grow microbes; phenoxyethanol is, with current knowledge, a reasonable choice.

Other names: Fenoksietanol
