What is this ingredient, what does it do?

Hidden formaldehyde (in hair straighteners; banned in the EU)

May cause irritation

What is it, what should you do?

A substance used in hair straightening (keratin) treatments as the dissolved-in-water form of formaldehyde; it releases formaldehyde as a gas during the heat process. Because formaldehyde gas can irritate the respiratory tract and is classified as a carcinogen, the EU banned this use. When getting a hair straightening service, making sure the salon uses a formaldehyde-free product is important for health.
