What is this ingredient, what does it do?
Microplastic (environmental concern)
What is it, what should you do?
A plastic micro-particle (microplastic) in scrub products. It has no proven harm to skin; the problem is environmental: it passes through treatment plants, reaches the sea and returns to the food chain. The EU has started the process of banning it in rinse-off cosmetics. Sugar-, apricot-kernel- or salicylic-acid-based scrubs are a better alternative for both skin and sea.
Other names: Polymethyl methacrylate
