Ingredient

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

Caution

What is this ingredient, what does it do?

Harsh surfactant

May cause irritation

What is it, what should you do?

A strong detergent (SLS) that gives shampoos and cleansers their rich foam. The cancer claims are an urban legend, there is no such evidence; its real problem is that it can strip too much of the skin's protective oils and cause dryness, itching and irritation. It makes a marked difference in dry/sensitive skin and eczema: switching to an SLS-free (sulfate-free) cleanser reduces redness in most people.

Other names: Sls, Ammonium lauryl sulfate, Sodium c14-16 olefin sulfonate
