What is Nutri-Score and how is it calculated?

Short answer

Nutri-Score is a label system that summarizes a food's nutritional quality in a single letter from A (best, green) to E (worst, red). It scores the product's positive (fiber, protein, fruit-vegetable) and negative (sugar, salt, saturated fat, calories) nutrients and turns them into a letter; it is used to quickly compare similar products.

How is it calculated?

Per 100 grams, negative components (calories, sugar, saturated fat, salt) give minus points; positive components (fiber, protein, fruit-vegetable-nut content) give plus points. The difference is converted to a letter (A-E). Drinks use a separate, stricter scale because liquid sugar is consumed more easily.

What it is and is not for

Nutri-Score is great for comparing products in the same category (which biscuit, which yogurt is better). But it is not for comparing different categories and does not measure additives, processing level or portion size. So 'A' does not always mean 'eat unlimited' and 'E' does not mean 'poison'; it should be read as an indicator.

Frequently asked

Is every Nutri-Score A product healthy?

It means good within its category, but is not a standalone 'healthy' verdict. Still, A/B products generally contain less sugar, salt and saturated fat than D/E.

Why do drinks score worse?

Because liquid sugar is consumed quickly and in large amounts, drinks use a separate, stricter scale; apart from plain water, drinks can score at most B.

Is Nutri-Score mandatory?

In Europe it is a voluntary label; not every product carries it. We calculate and show it for products that have nutrition data.
