You have a cream in your hand. You turn it over and face a twenty-line list of mostly unfamiliar names: Aqua, Glycerin, Cetearyl Alcohol, Butylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Parfum... Most people give up at this point and buy based on the price or the packaging. Yet that list is more honest about the product than anything the advertising says.

The good news: you do not need to be a chemist to read it. A few rules and five ingredient groups cover ninety percent of the job. The rest is usually detail anyway. In this post I explain first how the list is ordered, then the most debated ingredient groups, what to look for by product type and skin type, and finally which of the marketing claims on the label actually mean something.

Let me underline one thing from the start: the aim here is not to frighten you. Most of the 'stay away from this ingredient' lists circulating online are stripped of context and produce needless anxiety. In cosmetics, three things determine an ingredient's effect: its concentration, how long it stays on the skin in that product, and how your own skin responds to it. Any list that ignores these three is misleading.

What is INCI, and why do the names look so foreign?

Cosmetic labels use an international naming system called INCI. The aim is simple: the same ingredient should carry the same name across countries so consumers do not get lost. That is why water is written as 'Aqua' both in a cream you buy in Türkiye and in one you buy in France. The system is not fully uniform, though: on US labels the same ingredient appears as 'Water'.

Plant ingredients are written with their Latin botanical names; olive oil becomes 'Olea Europaea Fruit Oil' and aloe vera becomes 'Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice'. Colourants are shown with numbers starting with CI (such as CI 77491). This unfamiliarity seems off-putting at first, but it is actually an advantage: a name you learn once stays the same on every product for life. The most important rule: the order

The ingredient list is not random; ingredients are ordered by amount, from most to least. This single rule changes how you read a label. 'Aqua' is almost always first, and that is normal: most creams, lotions and shampoos are mostly water by weight. In water-free products (oils, balms, powders, pressed make-up) the first ingredient is an oil or a silicone instead, and that is normal too. The first five ingredients define the character of the product; the rest is detail.

Now the critical detail: ingredients below 1 percent may be listed in any order. So towards the end of the list the ordering no longer signals amount, and exactly where that boundary falls varies from product to product. Knowing this defuses a common trap: if that precious botanical extract from the advertising sits at the very end, among the preservatives, it is probably a trace amount. The product may be 'with aloe vera', but the aloe vera inside might be a single drop.

A practical test: if the ingredient claimed to be active is not in the first five or six positions, treat the claim with caution. The same logic applies to food labels; we covered the details in how to read an ingredient list.

Five ingredient groups, in one table

The table below summarises the five most debated groups in skincare, the names they appear under on labels, and who should pay the most attention. Reading it once will make every future label easier.

1. Harsh cleansers: plenty of foam, different issue

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and its relatives are strong foaming agents and they really do their job well. That is exactly the problem: the cleaning power can be excessive and strip away the skin's own protective oil layer. For most people this is not an issue with occasional use. But if your skin feels tight or itchy after washing, or your scalp flakes, it makes sense to look for these near the top of the label.

A frequently confused detail: 'Sodium Laureth Sulfate' (SLES) is different from SLS and is generally gentler. That small difference in the name changes the effect on skin. Gentler cleansers exist too, and they are recognisable on the label: names like Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Decyl Glucoside, Coco-Glucoside and Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate usually point to milder formulas. 2. Fragrance: the crowd behind one word

On the label you see a single word, 'Parfum' or 'Fragrance'. But dozens, sometimes more than a hundred, components can sit behind that one word. Manufacturers are not required to list them individually because the fragrance recipe can be treated as a trade secret. This is the least transparent point on the label.

The European Union narrowed, though did not fully close, that gap: known fragrance allergens must be listed separately when used above certain thresholds. That list stood at 26 substances for years; a 2023 amendment expanded it to around 80, and the expanded list becomes mandatory for new products from summer 2026. That is why you see names like Limonene, Linalool, Citronellol, Geraniol, Coumarin and Benzyl Alcohol. These are not poison; most are natural components of essential oils such as lemon, lavender and rose. But fragrance is the most common cause of allergic contact reactions in cosmetics. If you have redness, itching or stinging you cannot explain, fragrance is the first thing to cut.

There is also a wording trap: 'fragrance-free' and 'unscented' are not the same thing. Fragrance-free means no fragrance was added. Unscented can mean another masking fragrance was added to cover the smell of the raw materials. If your skin is sensitive, the wording you want is 'fragrance-free'. 3. Preservatives: 'preservative-free' is not good news

There is a common misunderstanding: a 'contains no preservatives' claim is taken as a mark of quality. Yet any product containing water, such as creams, lotions, shampoos, toners and masks, is a welcoming environment for bacteria and mould. Without a preservative the product spoils within weeks, and putting a spoiled cream on your face is a far bigger risk than the preservative. Around the eyes that risk is more serious still.

The right question is not 'is there a preservative' but 'which preservative'. Some are debated and regulators have restricted them. Methylisothiazolinone (MI), for example, was banned in leave-on products in the EU and limited in rinse-off ones after a rise in contact allergy cases. Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives (such as DMDM Hydantoin and Imidazolidinyl Urea) are also debated for sensitive skin.

Parabens are probably the most misunderstood group. They have a bad reputation online, but regulatory bodies consider them safe at permitted levels; a few long-chain types were banned as a precaution. 4. Pore-clogging oils: it depends on your skin type

Some oils have a high comedogenic rating, meaning a greater chance of clogging pores. Coconut oil is the classic example: it works very well on the body and on dry skin, but it can increase blackheads and breakouts on an acne-prone face. Isopropyl Myristate, Isopropyl Palmitate and some cocoa butter forms are debated in the same way.

But you should not trust the comedogenic scale blindly. Those ratings mostly come from old rabbit-ear tests done with the pure ingredient; in a product that oil sits at maybe two percent, alongside other ingredients. So the scale is a clue, not a verdict. The real test is your own skin: using a new product for two weeks and checking whether new blackheads appear in the same area is more reliable than any list. 5. Alcohols: not all the same, in fact opposites

Before panicking at the word 'Alcohol' on a label, read the full name; there are two different alcohol families in cosmetics and their jobs are opposites. 'Alcohol Denat.', 'SD Alcohol 40' and 'Isopropyl Alcohol' are volatile alcohols: they make a product feel light, help it dry quickly and reduce stickiness in sunscreens. They have their uses, but with frequent use they can be drying on dry and sensitive skin.

By contrast Cetyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Alcohol and Behenyl Alcohol are fatty alcohols. They do not dry the skin; they are used to thicken creams and soften skin. Avoiding them because the name contains 'alcohol' means eliminating a helpful ingredient. In short: be cautious if you see 'Denat.'; 'Cetyl/Cetearyl/Stearyl' is usually fine, though contact allergy is occasionally reported in people with eczema.

What to look for by product type

The same rules do not carry the same weight on every product. What matters is whether the product stays on the skin. A rinse-off product touches the skin for seconds; a leave-on product for hours. That is why the same ingredient can be a non-issue in a cleanser and matter much more in a serum.

  • Cleansers and shampoos: here the real issue is how harsh the foaming agent is. Because the product does not stay on the skin, tolerance for fragrance and preservatives is relatively higher; still, fragrance can matter if your scalp is sensitive.
  • Moisturisers and serums: because they stay on the skin for hours, the choice of fragrance and preservative is critical here. The first five ingredients give the product's real identity; check where the claimed active actually sits.
  • Sunscreen: look at the filter type. Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide are mineral filters and are usually better tolerated on sensitive skin. Chemical-filter formulas feel lighter but can sting some people, and may contain more alcohol.
  • Make-up: a long list is normal here and not a bad sign. What stand out are the pigments (numbers starting with CI) and, in long-wearing products like foundation, potentially pore-clogging oils.

The question of concentration in actives

For actives such as niacinamide, retinol, vitamin C and acids, the concentration matters as much as the presence of the ingredient. But labels usually do not state it, as they are not required to. That leaves us with the ordering again: if the active sits in the middle or at the end of the list, its concentration is low and it may not deliver the claim from the advertising.

There is also a mistake in the opposite direction: people assume the higher the concentration, the better. For most actives that is not true. Niacinamide typically works well between 2 and 5 percent; at higher concentrations the added benefit appears limited while the chance of irritation rises. With retinol and acids too, starting low and letting the skin adapt gives far better results than starting high and damaging the barrier. So a big percentage on the label is not always good news.

Marketing claims: which ones mean anything?

The claims on the front of the packaging do not all carry the same weight. Some have a legal definition, others are pure marketing language. Telling them apart saves you money.

  • 'Hypoallergenic': there is no legally defined, binding standard for it. A manufacturer may use it for a formula it considers low-risk; it is not a guarantee.
  • 'Dermatologist approved / tested': unless it says how many people were tested and under what conditions, the informational value is limited. The size of the test is rarely stated.
  • 'Natural' and 'organic': 'natural' has no binding definition; 'organic' only means something if there is an independent certification logo. Details: what natural and organic labels mean.
  • 'Paraben-free', 'sulfate-free', 'silicone-free': these tell you what is NOT in the product, not what is. You need to look at what replaced the removed ingredient.

The label also carries these: PAO and batch number

Next to the ingredient list there are two more markings most people never notice. The first is PAO, the 'period after opening': a small open-jar symbol with a note like 6M or 12M inside. 12M means you should finish the product within twelve months of opening it. This period exists because once opened, the product is exposed to air and microbes. Not every product carries a PAO: where the minimum durability is under 30 months, an expiry date is given instead.

The second is the batch (lot) number: it identifies the production run and makes it possible to trace a product if something goes wrong. A short guide by skin type

A 30-second check at the shelf

  • Look at the first five ingredients: that is what tells you the real composition, not the front of the pack.
  • If your skin is sensitive, look for 'Parfum' and the allergen names beside it; choose the fragrance-free version when there is one.
  • If you are acne-prone, check whether highly comedogenic oils sit near the top of the list.
  • If you see 'Alcohol', read the full name: 'Denat.' can be drying, 'Cetyl/Cetearyl' is not.
  • If the special ingredient from the advertising is at the very end of the list, it is probably a trace amount.

Five common mistakes

  • Treating a long list as automatically bad: the number of ingredients says nothing about quality; sunscreens and make-up have long lists by nature.
  • Mistaking chemical names for danger: 'Tocopherol' is vitamin E and 'Ascorbic Acid' is vitamin C. A scientific-sounding name does not mean a harmful ingredient.
  • Rejecting a product over a single ingredient: the effect is usually determined by the proportion and the formula as a whole.
  • Equating price with quality: expensive products can contain harsh cleansers and heavy fragrance, and cheap products can have good formulas.
  • Trusting the 'natural' label during pregnancy: some botanical extracts and retinoids are not recommended in that period; details in skincare during pregnancy.

Final word: it is not a list, it is a match

None of the ingredients in this post is one to 'avoid' on its own. In cosmetics the right question is not 'is this ingredient bad' but 'is this ingredient right for my skin'. The same ingredient list can be excellent on dry skin and troublesome on acne-prone skin; that is not a contradiction, it is the nature of the subject. Turning the label over, recognising the five groups above and knowing the ordering rule is more than enough for you to make that match yourself.
