The vegan mark no longer turns up only in the dairy and meat aisles; it is on shampoo, on lipstick, even on nail polish packaging. So what exactly does this small mark say in food and in cosmetics, what does it not guarantee, and where do animal ingredients hide on a label? Below we take on both fields under a single heading.
You may have arrived here for two different reasons: an ethical choice, or avoidance driven by allergy or belief. In both cases the useful tool is the same: knowing how to read an ingredient list and recognising which name points to which source. Below we separate the concepts first, then show the commonly hidden ingredients in food and cosmetics one by one.
Vegan, vegetarian, plant-based: three separate words
These three phrases are used interchangeably in everyday speech, yet they say different things on a label. Vegan is the narrowest definition: no animal ingredient or derivative at all. Vegetarian is broader: slaughter products are excluded but milk, eggs and honey may be present. 'Plant-based' is a phrase spread by marketing language with no binding definition; it usually means predominantly plant, not entirely plant.

The animal ingredients that slip past you in food
Here is the difficulty: animal ingredients do not always shout their name. Some stand behind technical names, others behind E-numbers. The following are the ones most often missed on shelves here.
- Gelatine: obtained from bone and skin; found in soft sweets, marshmallow, some yogurts and desserts, and invisible to the eye because it is colourless.
- Carmine (E120): a red colourant obtained from the cochineal insect; used in sweets, fruit dairy products and some drinks.
- Animal rennet: traditional cheese rennet is animal-derived; producers using microbial rennet usually state so on the label.
- Whey powder, casein and lactose: these can appear in unexpected products such as biscuits, crisps and instant soups.
- Honey: it features as a sweetener in cereal bars, breakfast cereals and some sauces.
- Fish gelatine and similar fining agents: used to clarify certain drinks and they may not appear in the ingredient list.
- Vitamin D3: in supplements and fortified products it is mostly obtained from sheep's wool, though lichen-derived vegan versions exist.
E-numbers that can be animal-derived

The uncertainty in this table is exactly where certification earns its keep: you cannot tell the source of E471 from a label, whereas a certified vegan product has answered that question on the producer's behalf.
In cosmetics it comes down to INCI names
In cosmetics, vegan means no animal-derived ingredient or derivative appears in the formula. The hide-and-seek is craftier here, because INCI names are a mix of Latin and English and rarely give the source away. Working on a 'there is no meat in it' basis does not help; the derivatives are what to look at.
- Lanolin: an oil obtained from sheep's wool, common in lip balms and rich moisturisers.
- Cera alba or beeswax: used as a thickener in balms, mascara and solid deodorants.
- Keratin and collagen: traditionally obtained from horn, feathers and hide; plant and fermentation-derived alternatives now exist.
- Carmine or CI 75470: an insect-derived red pigment, frequently used in lipsticks, blushers and eyeshadow palettes.
- Guanine: a pearlescent pigment obtained from fish scales, found in nail polish and shimmering make-up.
- Squalane: can be animal-derived (fish liver) or plant-derived (olive, sugarcane), and the label does not state the source.
- Sodium tallowate: a soap base made from animal fat, encountered in traditional bar soaps.
- Silk protein and sericin: obtained from the silkworm cocoon and used in hair and skin products.
- Hyaluronic acid: once obtained from rooster combs, today produced largely by fermentation.

Do not confuse vegan with cruelty-free
The two concepts are often used as if they were the same, yet they answer different questions. Vegan is about what is inside the product. Cruelty-free is about how the product was tested. A product may contain beeswax and still never have been tested on animals; or it may be made entirely of plant ingredients and still have been subjected to testing because of the rules of a market where it is sold. That is why the two are asked separately.
In the EU, testing cosmetic products and ingredients on animals, and placing tested products on the market, are prohibited. This creates a baseline for products on the EU market; however, if a product is also sold in other markets, the rules there may come into play. In short, a cruelty-free claim is a question covering every market a product reaches.
A logo, or the producer's own sentence?
Not every 'vegan' word on packaging carries the same weight. Independent certifications such as the V-Label or the Vegan Society sunflower logo show that both the ingredients and the production process have been audited; these programmes question cross-contamination on the line as much as animal ingredients. A producer's own statement is often accurate but may not have passed independent review.
Neither Türkiye nor the EU has yet settled a detailed legal definition governing the word 'vegan' on food labels on its own. That gap makes certification more valuable in practice. If your vegan preference is strict, looking for the logo is a sounder route than trusting the word.
Vegan is not a health grade
An important distinction: the vegan label is an ingredient statement, not a judgement about nutritional quality. Vegan crisps can still be high in salt and vegan cookies high in sugar; a plant-based ready-made patty can carry more salt than its animal-derived counterpart. The same holds on the cosmetics side: a vegan cream can carry fragrance components that sensitive skin may react to.

Points watched in a plant-heavy diet
This section is general information, not a personal nutrition plan; for your own situation your doctor or a dietitian is the right address. In a predominantly plant-based pattern, the headings discussed most are vitamin B12, iron, calcium, vitamin D, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids. Because B12 is not reliably present in plant foods, it is planned through fortified products or supplements.
Absorption of iron from plant sources rises when it is eaten alongside foods containing vitamin C, which is why greens and lemon next to pulses make a sensible pairing. For calcium, fortified plant drinks, sesame and dark leafy greens are among the commonly suggested sources. On the omega-3 side, flaxseed, walnuts and algae-derived options are discussed. These are general frames; the amounts and the need vary from person to person.
The situation on shelves in Türkiye
Vegan options on local shelves have grown noticeably in recent years: plant drinks, plant-based ready meals and cosmetics carrying a vegan mark are now stocked by the large chains. Even so, the share of certified products remains lower than the share of products making the claim; in other words, not every pack saying vegan has been through an independent audit.
There is a local detail too: many traditional foods contain no animal ingredients at all yet carry no vegan mark. Olives, tahini, grape molasses, pulses and a great many dry goods sit in this group. So reading the ingredient list rather than hunting for a vegan mark opens up both a wider pool of products and, often, a friendlier price range.
Thirty seconds at the shelf
- Look for a certification logo: the V-Label or the Vegan Society sunflower is stronger assurance than a word the producer wrote themselves.
- Read the colourant line: if E120 or carmine appears, the product is not vegan.
- Check the rennet type in cheese: the phrase 'microbial rennet' shows animal rennet was not used.
- Use the allergen emphasis: milk, egg and fish warnings set in bold within the ingredient list give animal components away quickly.
- In cosmetics glance at the CI codes at the end of the list: CI 75470 means carmine.
- Note any 'may contain' wording: it is a cross-contamination warning rather than an ingredient statement, but it can be decisive for a strict preference.
